In this post we’ll learn the steps to install VCenter Server 6.0. VMware vCenter Server is the management server or central point for accessing ESX hosts and VMware clusters, accessing VMs, Storage, vSwitch and other components.
There are two version of VMware vCenter server – an installable version which runs on the Microsoft Windows and virtual appliance edition.
ESX hosts are hypervisors to create virtual machines and VMware vCenter Server is a server through which we can manage or access ESX hosts. VCenter server is not only restricted to manage ESXi seerver but it can also be used to manage VMware clusters, access virtual machines on ESX hosts, manage storage, vSwitch and other components.
Minimum Hardware and Software Requirements
- 64-bit windows 2008 R2 server is required
- 8 GB RAM
- 20 GB of Hard Disk space on windows server
- 2 Core CPU
- One Service Account
Steps to install vCenter server 6.0
Mount the vSphere 6.0 installation media. The installation wizard appears. In the left pane select “vCenter Server for Windows” and click on Install.
In the welcome screen window, Click next to proceed,
Accept VMware License agreement and click Next.
There are two deployment types in VMware vCenter, Embedded Architecture and Centralized Architecture.
Embedded Architecture is recommended for deployments with 8 or fewer management nodes.
Centralized Architecture is recommended for deployments with 9 or more management nodes. In my case I am going to use Embedded Architecture.
Enter the hostname that you would like to use to manage the local system. The hostname will be encoded in the system’s SSL certificate and components will contact each other via this address.
Provide the Single Sign-On Configuration & make sure your password meet the password complexity requirements.
Choose the service account to run the vCenter Service under
Choose your vCenter DB Configuration
Keep the vCenter ports as it is. If you get any port conflict error open IIS & check whether exiting website is going the port which is required by vCenter server.
Confirm the installation destination folder
Click on Install to start the installation process.
Click on Finish to Complete vCenter installation.
You can access the vSphere Web Client by clicking on the Launch vSphere web client button
