How To Transfer FSMO Roles

Before entering into this topic let’s see what is FSMO roles and why it is required in Active Directory Environment.

What Is FSMO Roles?

FSMO Roles – Flexible Single Master Operation is the main features of windows Active Directory server. Generally AD is a multi master distributed database and these roles are used to reduce conflict and facilitate communication concerning replication between domain controllers.

Forest Wide Roles:

These roles are applicable at the Forest level

  • Schema Master
  • Domain Naming Master

Domain Wide Roles:

These roles are applicable at the Domain level

  • RID Master
  • PDC Emulator
  • Infrastructure Master

In this demo i have used 2 servers and i have listed the same for complete understandings.

 

Server Details From My end for FSMO Roles Transfer.

 

Server-1:   DoubtsClearPDC.DoubtsClear.com – Currently holds all the 5 FSMO Roles

Server-2:   DoubtsClearADC.DoubtsClear.com – Planning to Transfer all the roles to this server (DoubtsClearPDC to DoubtsClearADC)

 

Now lets start transferring the Roles one by one.

Transferring Schema Master role using Active Directory Schema snap-in

 

  • You have to register schmmgmt.dll in order to be able to use the Active Directory Schema snap-in
  • Go to Run command, Type regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll and Click OK
  • A popup message will confirm that schmmgmt.dll was successfully registered. Click OK.

 

How To Transfer FSMO Roles To a Domain Controller

 

  • Now Go to Run and type MMC and then Click OK.
  • A Console will be opened, Click File > then click Add/Remove Snap-in
  • From the left side, under Available Snap-ins, click on Active Directory Schema, then click Add > and then click OK

  • Right click Active Directory Schema, and then click Change Active Directory Domain Controller

  • And select the server (DoubtsClearADC.DoubtsClear.com) on which the Roles Needs to be transferred.

  • In the console tree, right click Active Directory Schema and then click Operations Master

 

How To Transfer FSMO Roles To a Domain Controller

 

  • On the Change Schema Master page, the current schema master role holder and the targeted schema holder will be displayed.
  • Once you click Change, the schema master holder will change to the server on which you want transfer the roles (DoubtsClearADC.DoubtsClear.com).
  • Click yes to confirm the role transfer.
  • The Schema master role will be transferred and a confirmation message will be displayed. Click OK

Now Transferring Domain Naming Master Role Using Active Directory Domains and Trusts snap-in

  • Click on Mange > Tools > then click Active Directory Domains and Trusts
  • Right click Active Directory Domains and Trusts, and then click Change Active Directory Domain Controller

  • From the listed Domain Controllers, select DoubtsClearADC.DoubtsClear.com and then click on OK

How To Transfer FSMO Roles To a Domain Controller

  • Right click Active Directory Domains and Trusts, and then click Operations Master

 

How To Transfer FSMO Roles To a Domain Controller

  • Once you click Change, the Domain Naming master holder will change to the server on which you want transfer the roles (DoubtsClearADC.DoubtsClear.com).
  • Click yes to confirm the role transfer.

How To Transfer FSMO Roles To a Domain Controller

The Domain Naming master role will be transferred and a confirmation message will be displayed. Click OK

 

Transferring RID Master, PDC Emulator, and Infrastructure Master Roles Using Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in

  • Click on Mange > Tools > then click Active Directory Users and Computers.
  • Right click and then click on change domain controller
  • From the listed Domain Controllers, select DoubtsClearADC.DoubtsClear.com and then click on OK
  • Right click Active Users and Computers, and then click Operations Master
  • There will be three Tabs, representing three FSMO roles (RID, PDC, Infrastructure). Click the Change button under each of these three tabs to transfer their respective roles.

  • Click the Change button under each of these three tabs (RID, PDC, Infrastructure) to transfer the roles.
  • The role will be transferred and a confirmation message will be displayed. Click OK
